David Diaz

2024 NYIP Grad of the Year Finalist David Diaz

This new grad is a musician and bartender with a passion for photography. Born in Colombia, he now resides in Astoria, NY with his wife and cat. His photography journey began behind the computer, not the camera. David took us through the evolution of his career:

David: Initially, my career in photography did not start behind the camera but in front of the screen as a photo and video editor. I have always been fascinated by learning how to use audio, photo, and video editing programs, which led me to develop solid skills in these areas.

So, how did David pivot from editing to shooting?

David: One day, my wife told me she wanted to take a photography course. I was excited to discover that we shared this passion and decided to study together. This decision has led us to work together on various photography and video projects, combining our skills and creating something unique and special. Nowadays, we greatly enjoy collaborating on our projects, and photography has evolved from a hobby to become an integral part of our lives and careers.

He expressed how helpful the courses were, from learning the equipment to mastering composition and lighting. Upon completion, he received a certificate to help him stand out to potential clients, of which David has many.

David: Thanks to what I have learned at the NIYP, I have completed multiple photography and video projects for dance academies, weddings, product photography, and various events. Studying at the institute has directed me towards wanting to start a photography business with my wife and live from what we love doing.

Dennis Beaulieu

2024 NYIP Grad of the Year Finalist Dennis Beaulieu

Connecticut entrepreneur Dennis Beaulieu loves to find the beauty in everything. He’s been a bar owner and mobile tattoo supply vendor, but he’s most proud of his achievements with his art and photography.

Dennis: I've always been an artist, working with graffiti and oil painting. But with painting, I often found myself wishing I could change something after the fact. Photography changed that for me. Once I capture the perfect shot, it's done, and it feels incredibly rewarding. It was a friend who suggested I try photography, and it’s been one of the best decisions I've made.

NYIP:What made you choose NYIP?

Dennis: I love to invest in myself and was looking for a solid program to build a base. After doing some research, NYIP stood out as the best option for getting the most out of my money. Plus, I’m from Connecticut and love New York City, so that connection was a draw for me as well.

NYIP:What was your favorite part of the program?

Dennis: Honestly, it's hard to pick just one thing. The assignments were amazing—I’d even go to Central Park to try to replicate some of the photos in the lessons. The flexibility to go back and rewatch sections was also huge for me. It felt like taking amazing notes, but they were all right there on the computer.

NYIP:Did the online format work well for you?

Dennis: Definitely. I actually feel like it gave me more freedom. I wasn’t stressed out about being in a classroom. Instead, I could take my time and really focus on the assignments. The projects were challenging but in a way that prepared me for real-world photography.

He states the course gave him a lot more confidence in his photography and editing skills, and it’s easy to see that come through in his images. Dennis leaves potential students with some advice:

Dennis: If you’re willing to put in the work, the rewards are incredible. The structure and feedback at NYIP really set you up for success. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Patricia Rojas

2024 NYIP Grad of the Year Finalist Patricia Rojas

After being given a camera phone at 15 years old, Patricia developed an interest in photography. She began taking simple photos before making the leap to a digital SLR camera. After enrolling in a photography course in her home country of Paraguay, she knew she wanted more. Patricia emigrated to the United States alone, living in New York and working odd jobs to save money.

Patricia: I worked six days a week until I was finally able to enroll in this professional photography course. I spent hours every night on the course, even though I had to be up early the next day. I read the course material during my lunch hours with my little notebook where I wrote down everything I learned.

Months passed, and I finally finished it. It was then that I understood I was living a dream that finally came true after so many hours, after leaving my country, my mom, my dad, my friends, and spending so many Christmases away from my family. I was finally able to graduate as a professional photographer in New York.

She shares what it’s like working through the courses and completing the program:

Patricia: I learned a lot with each assignment and each piece of advice from the teachers. Even when I didn’t get an assignment right, they told me my mistakes with great patience, and I did it again with much more confidence.

Patricia says she comes from a small and difficult country where it isn’t easy to become a professional photographer, let alone buy a professional camera. But she persevered, made the move to NY, and made her dream a reality.
